  2017 Festival Programme

Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival will celebrate its 63rd Birthday in September 2017 with a 3 day programme of fantastic events in the festival marquee on Nimmo’s Pier, Galway City!

Tickets for all the events are available at our Festival Box Office 

 Friday 22nd September

Opening Night – 7pm til late  

Competition Starts at 9:15

Tickets: €40

Kick off the Festival Weekend and cheer on the Openers for the Irish Oyster Opening Championship. When the competition is over dance your way into a great weekend with live music and DJ til’ late.

There will be live music and entertainment all evening. Tickets for the night include Oysters or Seafood Dish and a Glass of Wine/Pint of Draft. A Full bar will be available throughout the evening.

Saturday 23rd September

World Oyster Opening Championships  – From 2pm to 8pm

Competition Starts at 4pm

Tickets: €70

Join our Competitors Parade from Eyre Sq, which departs at 1:30. Assembling at Eyre Square, the Parade will make its way down Shop St, High St and over Wolf Tone bridge to the Festival Marquee at Nimmo’s Pier. The highly competitive World Oyster Opening Championships is the highlight of the day when 22 International Openers will shuck it out for the crown of World Champions, with bands to keep the party going all day long.

Tickets include two seafood taster plates, half a dozen oysters and Glass of Wine/Pint of Draft.

Saturday September 23rd

Masquerade Mardi Gras 

Galway Arts Centre, Monroe’s Live & The Festival Marquee – 8pm till late

Tickets: €100 

Soak up some culture in the Galway Arts Centre with an Oyster and Prosecco reception followed by starter course and raucous Mardi Gras Céilí at Monroe’s Live.

Then parade Mardi Gras style to the Festival Marquee for main course, desert and dancing ’til the wee hours. We encourage you to join in, make new friends, throw caution to the wind and dress as extravagantly as you dare!

Tickets include Prosecco reception with Oyster, 3 course meal with wine and dancing ’till the wee hours!

Sunday 24th September 

Féile Bia Na Mara – Wild Atlantic Tastes

12:00 Kelly’s Oysters

At a small inlet on Galway Bay the perfect combination of pristine seas and clean, ‘fresh water’ provides the ideal habitat for oysters to feed and thrive, and it is here that the Kelly family harvests oysters that have been described by top chefs as “the best flavoured in the world”.  Let Kelly’s talk you through the basics of an oyster tasting and exactly what makes our West Coast offering amongst the best in the world.

13:00 European Region of Gastronomy – J.P. McMahon

Galway has been selected as European Region of Gastronomy for 2018.This unique award will afford us the opportunity to celebrate our unique food culture through-out the year with a wide range of events. JP Mc Mahon, our ambassador for this designation will showcase a sample of our unique coastal food heritage in a modern way with his recipe for Oyster, Burnt Cabbage and Sea Vegetables. JP is committed to the educational and ethical aspects of food, to buying and supporting the best of local and free-range produce, and engaging directly with farmers and producers.

14:00 Dock 1 – Brian McMonagle

Brian will be showcasing baked whole black sole on the bone, with local clam and foraged Spiddal seaweed velouté.

15:00 The Barilla Pasta Lab – Christopher Warren

Chris will be imparting his deep knowledge on how to prepare and cook traditional Italian pasta and the versatility of Barilla product range. He will be showcasing the great tasting Sea-food linguini by Barilla.

16:00 The Kasbah

Chef’s Sarah Coffey and Claire Conway present culinary delights from Galway’s newly opened, The Kasbah Wine Bar.

17:00 Counterpoint – John Hardiman

Presents an informative demo of wine and seafood pairings.

                                                                                   Family Entertainment:

Enjoy a jam packed programme of entertainment for all the family in the festival marquee on Sunday. Free for kids under 12 and just €15 for adults. Try your hand at juggling or tightrope walking with the talented crew from Galway Community Circus and transform for the afternoon  with family face-painting.

                                                                                        Music Programme:

Jazz, Swing, Jive, you’ll be hard pressed not to be seduced into  tapping your toes and dancing the afternoon away!
